I read an interesting article from Michael Morisy at SearchUnifiedCommunications.com which describes the Google Voice application for BlackBerry that was released this week.  Google Voice provides single number reach for personal use to ring your mobile and home phones, as Agito RoamAnywhere does for enterprise use. Where Agito differs is that we have focused on the enterprise requirements and thus provide integration wiith the enterprise PBX and UC infrastructure along with enabling VoWLAN and seamless sub-100ms WiFi to/from Cellular handover.

One of the observations that Michael made and we also see is that Google Voice doesn’t support Voice over WiFi that Agito does support.  One of the interesting benefits of Agito for Google Voice is that if a customer has deployed Agito RoamAnywhere then when  calls are made through Google Voice on the BlackBerry is that we are able to co-exist and automatically route those calls as VoIP over the enterprise WiFi thus eliminating the need for use of cellular minutes when in a WiFi area. огромные сиськи в мире

Philippe Winthrop at Strategy Analytics poses an interesting question:

“So what about WiFi companies such as Aruba Networks, Bluesocket, Cisco, Extricom, HP ProCurve, and Meru?

They all talk about enterprise mobility, but are they REALLY in the enterprise mobility space?”

I agree in spirit with Philippe – that enterprise mobility is the intersection of lots of “things” – devices, applications, **AND** infrastructure (cellular, WiFi, 3G/4G). So in my opinion, WiFi infrastructure is part of enterprise mobility – but they are not an island unto themselves.

Cisco, Aruba, and Meru – to name just a few – do great things to make applications that ride on the infrastructure work well, especially around voice, such as QoS and Call Admission Control, things that make devices work better such as WMM-PowerSave (aka 802.11e U-APSD) for greatly enhanced battery life, and make the WiFi bits easier to manage (Cisco AutoRF, Aruba ARM, and Meru Air Traffic Control).

But to Philippe’s point, it is the sum of the whole that addresses the business need.

There was an exciting announcement this week from Cisco and Agito Networks about how the two companies are partnering to provide an integrated enterprise fixed mobile convergence (eFMC) solution for Cisco customers. This effort validates what our Agito customers have already learned. That is, only Agito’s user location (click here to learn more about our location technology and architecture) and integration with the wireless networks – whether it is the home, public, or enterprise network – provides the best possible mobile voice user experience. This is why Agito is the only enterprise mobility company invited to integrate with Cisco at this stage. It also goes without saying that it is also great to see a leader such as Cisco recognizing the importance of enterprise mobility for customers to improve their business operations, a validation of the eFMC space.

But don’t just take our word for it. Industry reception of this integration has also been extremely positive. To see some of the best coverage we’ve seen, check out Agito’s coverage page which we’ll be updating with this launch coverage periodically this week. While Cisco has the brand recognition, the huge installed base, and a leading WLAN system, most editor and analysts understand Agito’s innovation, and contribution in this partnership. Agito’s integration into the MSE will provide:

• Intelligent, seamless roaming between Cisco’s WLAN in-building networks and cellular networks. It’s Agito’s handover capability from WiFi to cell, and cell to WiFi (not just Cisco WiFi, but home WiFi for example) that is being leveraged for this solution.
• Robust context awareness of networks outside of Cisco’s WLAN (cellular, home, etc.). Cisco provides intelligence within the network, and it’s Agito’s client on the mobile device that provides intelligence when mobile users are outside Cisco’s network.
• Mobile UC functionality extended to mobile users. The MSE connects to the Agito client on the mobile device, but it’s Agito’s RoamAnywhere Mobility Router that connects the device to the enterprise PBX and provides all the mobile UC functionality.
• Mobility policies capabilities – Agito’s location-based policies are leveraged, especially polices applied when outside the network, where Agito has the visibility.

For Agito, Cisco adds network intelligence, information from Cisco’s Unified Wireless Network, to Agito’s RoamAnywhere as an optional metric to help determine the time and place for wireless network handover. Agito’s RoamAnywhere already uses the industry’s most robust set of metrics to determine WiFi/cellular routing – including user location, call cost, battery life, call quality, network reliability, user load and signal strength.

As enterprise mobility becomes a business critical need for enterprises, Agito’s RoamAnywhere products make up the only enterprise-ready mobility architecture with high-availability; a scalable, non-blocking architecture; and LDAP/ActiveDirectory (click here for more details) integration for ease of deployment that enterprises require. Agito brings a solution for enterprise mobility, and mobile UC to Cisco customers.

Interop 2008 in Las Vegas is always an interesting event to attend and participate in. As an advocate for mobility, I always enjoy taking part in panel sessions, talking to customers and other technology companies, and engaging in lively discussion and debate.

I was on a panel for called “Convergence: Technologies and Strategies.” The panel consisted of a variety of companies in the mobility and convergence space, but it was the theme of the session that was so interesting – “Did you know eFMC was available now? Here is how to deploy it.” It was wonderful to see the 70 or so real enterprises folks (out of about 100 attendees) realize that this technology is real and here today from Agito Networks.

I also had the opportunity to record a podcast about eFMC and Mobility with Curt Franklin. We discussed a range of topics from wireless security to business drivers for mobility and eFMC, to how we see mobility, presence and unified communications evolving.

We also announced the first phase of our eFMC Interoperability Program. The eFMC “Passport” included WLAN infrastructure vendors like Meru Networks, Trapeze Networks, and Aerohive, and PBX vendors including Avaya. This program highlights that eFMC is happening now and across a broad ecosystem of vendors.

It was a great show for Agito, and based on the number of customers we continue to deploy, 2008 looks to be the year for eFMC.

We are honored to be selected by VON magazine as a Editor’s Top Ten Pick for the VON Innovator awards. From a field of over 200 companies spanning a wide variety of technologies, we were the only eFMC/FMC company to be selected and ranked #4 overall.

This is the first time that we’ve gone head-to-head against competitors in our space for an industry designation such as this, so the recognition was even more satisfying. The industry players, just like enterprises, are selecting Agito Networks. More on this in our press release, and watch for further news from us about upcoming industry honors and recognition.

It was great seeing old friends at the show and it was great to make new ones.

I just came back from VoiceCon in Orlando last week. It was clear on the show floor that “mobility,” “mobile convergence” and “FMC” were the new monikers at Voicecon, while “unified communications” is still very much in vogue. All of the major enterprise voice vendors clearly messaged this in their booths, and all had a dedicated showcase of some kind of mobile-enabling voice solution. I couldn’t be happier to see large IP Telephony and Unified Communications companies underscoring our message – you can’t do UC without mobility! The challenge they have is their lack of products and solutions for mobility, and that is where Agito partners together with them to deliver a solution that solves customers’ mobility issues.

The conference sessions were well organized and well attended, including the panel on “Enterprise FMC: Is It Real?” that I participated on. To an audience of more than 150 attendees, moderator Michael Finneran delivered a colorful introduction to the fast developing market space of FMC gaining much attention at the show. He did a thorough job in outlining the potential approaches to enterprise FMC, and gave a crisp summary analysis of strengths/weaknesses and important considerations. Of these approaches, only the “PBX-integration approach” (that was the term he used) has real product available today and in production use by enterprises.

On the panel, I was able to talk in the context of actual customer deployment experiences, which I believe the audience appreciated over other panel members. Representatives from a large cell carrier and a large telecom equipment provider could only discuss future direction and intentions. I think the audience appreciated the real-world context of my responses. As proof, in the Q&A session at the end, all the questions from audience were about real-world implementations.

Kudos, to Fred Knight and the old BCR team for putting on another great show.

Wow! What a great week Agito Networks just had. On March 3-5, Agito was a sponsor and exhibitor at the Gartner Wireless & Mobile Summit, one of the premier mobility-focused shows on the conference circuit. While I didn’t attend too many of the individual sessions, Dan Spalding, my booth partner, and I had the pleasure of hosting dozens of the largest enterprises as they were searching for the next “new and exciting technology” to come to enterprise mobility for 2008. On During the event, sponsor booths were open to attendees to spend time with vendors to understand their value proposition, and experience demonstrations where available. On a side note, during my walk-through, unlike Agito, I noticed very few vendors with working demonstrations. Confirmed by event officials, Agito was in the fortunate position to have garnered significant interest at the event. Nearly every attendee who visited us was interested in increasing their company’s mobile worker productivity while reducing cellular expenses.

Agito had success across multiple fronts:

1. drawing large numbers of customers to our booth
2. retaining their interest with an interactive demo
3. being recognized by Gartner as having an innovative technology the analysts are interested in.

Customers were attracted to our four value propositions:

• Better In-Building Coverage
• Extend Desk Phone features to the Mobile Phone
• Drastically Reduce Mobile Costs
• Increased Visibility and Control

All of this in a platform that works with all PBXes and any wireless carrier.

We hosted an awesome demo that showcased our “sub-second location-aware, WiFi/Cellular handover”. Customers were able to experience an actual call starting in WiFi and transparently handing off to Cellular without any interruptions and another call starting on Cellular and transparently handing off to WiFi. In many cases, users were pleasantly surprised that Agito was able to deliver this level of performance without any dependence on the carrier. Agito’s patented Location-Aware Routing architecture worked its charm. By the end of the conference, we had heard the phrase “amazing technology” quite a few times, describing our product. While these were all interesting experiences, let’s investigate some of Agito’s drivers for success during this conference.

Almost everyone who came by was drawn by a few words on display: “Increased In-Building Coverage” and “Works with All Cellular Carriers”. Big names in aerospace, defense, city and state government, higher education, healthcare and automotives were drawn by Agito’s value proposition of increasing in-building coverage to help improve mobile worker productivity. Having business voice become the killer application to deliver converged enterprise services over an existing in-building wireless infrastructure was compelling to customers. The excitement from the prospects about the potential benefits from Voice over WLAN (VoWLAN) was apparent, namely how Agito’s innovative eFMC platform can increase accessibility and mobile worker productivity within their global workforce, while helping them reduce cellular expenses (as much as 60% in many cases). It was clear that we had exposed a pain point and hit a sweet spot with these prospects.

For example, a large multi-national company shared that they have relationships with all four major cellular carriers in the US, and accelerating in-building coverage for cellular using carrier-specific DAS systems would be a very expensive proposition. It would be cost-prohibitive, not to mention complex to deploy, and this infrastructure would be specific to voice within the enterprise. They are now looking at Voice over WLAN solutions that can provide “Fast and Automatic, Sub-Second handover” with support for all of their existing cellular carriers, narrowing their search to Agito. We look forward to starting our trial with this customer next quarter.

Another customer in the consumer durables sector was interested in driving greater value out of their IP Telephony infrastructure they had put millions of dollars into. With an increasingly mobile workforce using the mobile phone as their primary phone, it was increasing their mobile costs. When we presented Agito’s Mobile Extensions features, they instantly saw how this technology could help them increase the utilization of IP Telephony, and finally blend the flexibility of a mobile phone with the value of One Enterprise Number to drive increased productivity while lowering costs.

Overall, we had the chance to speak with over a hundred companies. Almost all of them had WLAN and IP Telephony deployed, and searching for innovative applications that can leverage this infrastructure to enhance the RoI of their investment. In many cases, Agito’s technology was the missing piece of the Mobile Convergence puzzle. Agito will be engaging with over two dozen customers in starting global trials on VoWLAN over the coming quarter.

It has been a while since I have had the chance to post. We have been working hard through launch, and speaking with loads of customer, press folks, and analysts over the last month. It has been fun, if not hectic.

As one of the founders of Agito, I was so excited to see our first trade show, the Mobile Business Expo at Interop New York, a few weeks back. Below are a few pictures (click the pictures for a larger image):

We were also honored to be selected as one of the “10 Head-Turning Products From Interop NY” by CRN. If you get a chance, you should take a look at our press coverage. The press, analysts, and much of the industry were eager to finally hear about what we were up, so the traction has been great.

What I learned:

• There is a lot of educating left to do. There was [is] a healthy chunk of enterprises that didn’t know it was possible to extend VoWLAN to dual mode phones, and have it operate seamlessly with any carrier network, all without needing to go through the carriers. The good news is that we are getting the word out, and enterprises are receptive to the message!
• Enterprises are willing to [further] invest in WiFi. I get asked quite a bit about why more enterprises have not deployed voice-ready WiFi networks, and how that impacts Agito’s solution. The answer is easy:
  

  Without an application that requires a voice-ready WLAN, like the Agito RoamAnywhere Mobility Router, enterprises don’t have a compelling reason to deploy one.

  The application drives the infrastructure, right? Every customer we met with at the Interop (and this carries across most every customer we have spoken with) was willing to augment their WLAN to make it voice-ready. They acknowledged WiFi is a low cost alternative to in-building cellular

• The carriers are “missing in action”. I was on a panel called “Strategies for Convergence” along with a major carrier (names intentionally left out to protect the, [dubiously] innocent) as well as a few carrier solution vendors. There was much debate around security, usability, cost savings, etc. but just before the session was over, an audience member asked each panelist to discuss pricing and availability of their solutions. When it came to the carrier to respond, he simply stated that he had no offering at present, and no offering planned for the near future. Most of us started chuckling, as did some of the audience, acknowledging the fact that carriers are more than happy to voice their opinions, but just aren’t able to get a solution for enterprise mobility designed and deployed.

From my perspective, it has been an exciting 18 months, from getting Agito started to the launch last month. There are real mobility challenges that enterprises need to address quickly, and we have developed groundbreaking, innovative technology to solve them. The excitement will be even greater in these next 18 months.
